My Racing Calendar for 2013

I currently have nothing scheduled, but I have some grand plans.

1) Charleston Half Marathon

My favorite city + my girl Christina + culinary delights + warmer weather than Chicago = a winning combo.

She just signed up and is putting the pressure on.  We are in negotiations, but thus far she has promised me wine before and after the race, running in leopard print, and that she will visit Chicago.  I have been looking at flights daily, and it looks promising.

2) Ahh, signing up for a FULL marathon is tempting me BIG time. I can't get this race out of my head.

Pros:
  • close to Chicago
  • I eventually want to run a marathon, WHY WAIT?
  • support from friends/bloggers who are doing the race
  • flat course
  • cheese-themed (who doesn't like cheese)
  • I've heard this race is well organized
  • inexpensive ($69)
  • smaller race (capped at 4,100 runner)
  • I can downgrade to the half if I chicken out
  • BIRTHDAY weekend (I've always wanted to run 26.2 miles when I was 26 years old and this would be the last day to do it)
  • I would have a really good excuse to go BIG for my birthday the following day

Cons:
  • I would have to run 26.2 miles
  • training through the winter in Chicago (hello treadmill)
  • gaining weight (vain, but true)
  • Neglecting other aspects of my fitness
  • I could go on a vacation for my birthday weekend that doesn't involve running 4+ hours
  • I'm scared/nervous/intimidated
  • I would try to just train to finish, but I know I would but expectation on myself to finish with an "ideal time"
  • I would spend my birthday (day after the marathon) in compression gear
  • If something disastrous happens during the marathon, I could have a bad birthday
  • If I really like it, I may have to run another one.
  • I love my running right now and I don't want to burn out

I am going to think about it until the end of the year and make a decision. I am really on the fence with this one.

3) Convincing my husband to go to Chapel Hill for the weekend is pretty easy, so the Tar Heel 10-Miler looks like a possibility.

4) If I don't run Wisconsin in April (or if I do and want to do it again), I have been keeping an eye on these two Maine races.

October 6, 2013

I have family up in Maine, and I love visiting during the Fall. The Maine Marathon has a Relay, so I could potentially bully pressure a family member/friend into running it with me. The MDI marathon just looks so beautiful and inviting and apparently there is Martha Stewart sightings.

What's your next race? I don't have anything at the moment and it's sad.
Any other pros or cons to consider with regards to the marathon?

I currently have no races as definite yet. My friend and I are seriously considering doing a half in Napa... but registration opens soon and it sells out quickly... so I guess we'll have to figure that out sooner than later!

Jealous you and christina are doing one together... since I have yet to meet her, I shall continue to live vicariously through you. :)

You have to do the Tar Hill Ten Miler! I did it last year and it was a great race! I did a little race recap on my blog. I will definitely be doing it again - but if you keep dropping your times like you have been, I am not sure I will be able to keep up with you!

Ahhhhh I wanna run the Charleston 1/2 too. Even though the course kind of stinks, I've been wanting to do that race since before I moved away. Maybe I will join y'all....Also been thinking of the Chapel Hill 10 Miler. Have you thought of doing the Chicago Marathon? (I'm sure you have.) I ran it in 2010 and it was AMAZING. I loved it and can't wait to do it again!

You drank the marathon juice, I see. But eeeeeeeeeh so excited for you to (hopefully) come to CHS! Hopefully you will find a good flight. Keep me in touch! And there is always wine at my house, along with those homemade raisin & rosemary crisps...tempting you more. haha!

My next race is my first half marathon which is the F^3 half marathon in January. Im thinking of doing that half marathon in Wisconsin in April but I need to see if I survive my first half. You can totally do a marathon if you want :).

You might not gain wait during marathon training. I didn't. I think if you stay realistic with how many calories you are actually burning, you can keep things in check and not overdo it.

I've never trained for a spring marathon, but I have run through Chicago winters. It's doable without resorting to the treadmill (most of the time). Of course, I grew up here, so I'm used to all the cold and snow. I second the CARA winter marathon training. Having a group really motivates you to keep getting out there.

My next race is the Beverly Turkey Trot 5K on 11/24 on the southside and then the Jingle Bell 5K on 12/9 way far south in Kankakee. And then the F3 Half in January.

I'm also busy planning my 2013 year.

And I did gain during marathon training and have yet to lose it. It makes me sad, but I did run two marathon this summer, so it is what it is.

AH I'm so jealous about the Charleston half! I would seriously consider that, but I'm going to be flying to charleston at least 2 other times next spring/summer for my best friend's wedding, so I really can't rationalize another trip down there when I have so many other friends I need to visit! And definitely take your time thinking about the marathon, there's no need to sign up now if you don't have to! When I decided to run Chicago I never even made a rational decision, I just knew. I kept it in my mind from October of last year and by December I knew there was no way I wasn't going to sign up, it just felt right!

Let me know if you do Wisconsin! I am rallying the troops

It's a stupid reason, but I'm just being honest and putting it all out there

I will have to look at this "CARA"...

If I decide to do it, you will be the first to know!

Trust me, training for a marathon in a Chicago winter is way easier than training for one in a Chicago summer. Just ask me about my 22 mile training run when it was a high of 90 degrees some time.

Seriously, though, I'm contemplating doing the Illinois Marathon which is the weekend before Wisconsin. So, you won't be the only person doing a spring marathon. And, yes, if you want a training group for your first one CARA is the place to be.

Ooo! I hope you do do the race with your friend! Will this be leopard print tops or bottoms or all?!

I love winter marathon training. It's my fave. The summer here can be brutal and the winter makes me feel like a running superstar. I hope you choose WI! I'll be there doing the half! :)

I have a trail race this weekend then two Thanksgiving 5Ks and another trail race on 12/1 :)
