m.henry

If you haven't noticed, I'm obsessed with breakfast.  I LOVE making myself breakfast during the week, but there is something very special about getting an hour extra of sleep on the weekends, and not getting my kitchen messy.

Enter...our weekend tradition of going out to breakfast. I wish I could say that we are part of the cool crowd that rolls into brunch on the edge of lunchtime with sunglasses and a hangover, but we are not. We are the early people that beat the crowd, rock out in cozy lululemon, and take photos of the food.

One of my husband's classmates mentioned that "the best pancakes in Chicago" were at this place called m.henry. Despite being 20 minutes away up in Andersonville, he had to go and test this claim.  He wouldn't stop talking about it, so we made a plan for a destination breakfast up north.

I had previously been up to Andersonville with my friend Heidi and could attest to the plethora of cute restaurants, so I  had some pretty high expectations. If I'm driving 20 minutes before 8AM, I expected something fabulous.

First things first, the staff here is AWESOME. Everyone has their own little style, but everyone is the friendly, helpful, and has a smile on their dial. You don't get far on your coffee before they offer a top up and they answered about 20 questions I had about the menu.

Speaking of the menu, it is full of delectable options and choosing was very difficult. I like to see options that go beyond the standard fare and m.henry fits the bill. On top of that, they have both breakfast and brunch menus available on the weekends. Double the difficulty in choosing...

Actually, let me rephrase that. I had difficulty choosing, while my husband just got everything.

Eggs, potatoes, pancakes, and candied bacon (recommended my our server).  The potatoes were loaded with herbs and flavor and reminded me of my mom's breakfast potatoes. I was expecting something mind-blowing with the pancakes and was severely underwhelmed. They tasted like very average pancakes...nothing more, nothing less. The highlight of his meal was the candied bacon, which despite grossing me out in theory, was quite tasty. Fat+Salt+Sugar is a proven combo... apparently even with bacon.

I ordered the Salmon Benedict that I believe was on a seasonal menu. I regret it because it wasn't great and so many other things on the menu looks incredible and I had major food envy of other tables. There was a ton of salmon, but it was staked thick on a soggy english muffin with a lukewarm and over poached egg on top. The sauce was supposed to be something with sun dried tomatoes, but it was a bit vinegary and off.

Based on the Yelp reviews, it's clear people like this place, but I think we ordered the wrong things. The table next to us ordered bread pudding with berries as a breakfast appetizer. I want those people as my friends!

In a nutshell. Not worthy of the title of "the best pancakes in Chicago", but I still really enjoyed having some breakfast in a new little neighborhood. Apparently the quest continues.  Carbs taste better on the weekends, it's a fact.

Have you tried anything sweet with bacon? I see all sorts of donuts and cupcakes with bacon, but I'm weary.
What time do you wake up on the weekends?

I went here once after a race with my friend. My food was great (I just had a pretty standard menu item- the omelet). My friend Annie got something that included polenta. Turns out Annie may be slightly intolerant of it. Sorta sucked...

Yes- breakfast is the best! Sorry you didn't have the best visit at m henry. They do have some tasty food though. Their French toast is good and the egg scrambles/omelets are great too.
Over Easy in Ravenswood is my favorite breakfast/brunch place. I've tried almost everything and its all been good. They have some awesome pancakes there too - some of the best I've had! You should check it out!

Omg. M.Henry is one of my favorite breakfast places in Chicago. If you go back, you have to order the breakfast bread pudding. It's such a sugar bomb but it's amazing.

I've had a bacon cupcake. Odd sounding, but the white cake was light, fluffy, and sweet, while the icing was just thick enough without going over, topped with a bit of chopped bacon. Perfect salt/sweet ratio.

On weekends I like to get up and run early on Saturday after day break (cuz running in the dark creeps me out) around 7 or 8.

I want to be one of those people that can wake up at like 7 am and go for a 10 mile run on the weekends. Unless I have a deadline, I am up at like 10. SMH.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I never skip it. I'm more of an oatmeal kind of girl myself, though

I enjoy getting an extra hour on the weekends, but since it's my time to relax, I don't want to waste the whole day away. I'm up around 7-7:30. And that bacon sounds FAB. I don't normally have it, so when I'm out I treat myself to a few pieces.

I envy you morning breakfast routine. I unfortunately don't have time to make something delicious before work, so I usually bump breakfast to night time. A few Summers ago I had a Bacon and Corn ice cream at a ice cream festival which was delicious. Even though, I still veer away from anything sweet with bacon in it.

I remember how good the candied bacon was when I visited m.henry! I think I also had a similar reaction to whatever I'd ordered on the egg/savory part of the menu though - lukewarm reaction.

I wonder if it's one of those places that is amazing if you live in the neighborhood (can get there quickly & frequently) but lost it's value on those of us who are trekking up from further away - our expectations are set higher because of the journey!

There's a popular donut shop that has maple bacon donuts. I thought that was a weird combo, but bacon seems to be popping up everywhere. Even desserts. I wake up early on Saturdays for a long run and sleep in on Sunday til 7:30am.
