The Magic

This post is long overdue, but it is something I have been wanted to share for a LONG TIME

Are you ready? Great. Let's Go.

I alluded to a book that I was reading called The Magic. If you've heard of The Secret, it is the same author, and projects the same teachings and principles. I discovered The Secret and the power of gratitude when I was in college and it completely changed my life for the better. Since then, I have successfully used the power of gratitude and the law of attraction and it's enriched my life in a way I never thought possible.

How this book found me:
When we were in Mauritius, we met some amazing people, including a very special woman from Switzerland. The way she spoke and alluded to some situations, I knew we were on the same page in our beliefs. The day before we left, we ran into her on the beach and she had purchased this book for me and my husband. First of all....Who does that? I had met her on two occasions, and we definitely had a connection, but for her to go to the book store and buy us a copy of a book was incredible. CLEARLY, it was something special. She explained that it was a 28 day exercise on gratitude and it would change our life.

To me, I took this as a sign. I didn't know very much about the book, but I knew it was given to me to start 2013 with a new fire and excitement for these principles.

At the beginning of this year, I started this amazing 28-day gratitude program and it's been SO AMAZING. As you can imagine, this is a VERY personal journey for me, but it's something that has been weighing on my heart to share because I want everyone I know/meet/come across to be able to experience this.

Every morning, I have been waking up at 6 and starting my day with The Magic

The reading is typically 4-10 pages and concludes with a "Magic Practice" that includes a list of exercises to do for the day.

The program adds on each day, but you will use a gratitude journal each morning and a gratitude rock each night.

Since starting the program, I've experienced some pretty exciting stuff that I wanted to share. They are some examples of how the principles work and have been a huge motivator that my "diet of gratitude" is working by creating some amazing situations, people, and things in my life.

1. You know how I mentioned that I finally took the plunge and bought a package of classes to FLYWHEEL? Instead of feeling uneasy about spending the money, I decided to embrace the purchase and focus on the good. I love the class, it's a phenomenal workout, and I always leave happy. During my first class of the package, I actually started to just say "thank you, thank you, thank you" in my head  during the cool down and stretch because the workout was fantastic and I was pumped full of endorphins. Want to hear what happened? The instructor reminded everyone to sign up for their FREE class since all 8:30AM classes for the month were take one, take one for free. UM...EXCUSE ME? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had never been to an 8:30AM class before in my life, but clearly I decided to take that day's 8:30 class for a reason. For all of this month, I have basically doubled my FLYWHEEL credits with this offer, meaning the price of the classes was cut in half. If you know FLYWHEEL, you know that this deal is a rare (they didn't even advertise it) and it happened to land right in my lap. Coincidence? Maybe....but I believe that this happened because I was truly grateful and no longer carried the "charge" of spending the money.

2. Do you remember these shades?

Yep, I got those babies for free from Sunglasses Shop for reviewing them on my blog. First of all,  big bloggers like Skinnyrunner and Hungry Runner Girl got the same opportunity, so I have no business in this arena.  What made them pick me? When I was in my closet the other day, it hit me. I have been cleaning out my clothes BIG TIME and I have been donating, giving to friends, and selling on Ebay. The same week I was contacted by Sunglasses Shop about the sunglasses, I had sold two pairs of older sunglasses I no longer wear on Ebay. When I thought about it, I realized that getting rid of old stuff allowed me to receive and attract new things. The law of attraction states that we must give to receive, so holding on to "stuff" meant that I was feeling insecure about my abundance. The Secret also speaks about "making room" physically for new items in your life, so by selling two pairs of sunglasses, I physically had room on my shelve that stores my sunglasses for another pair. Again....I believe this was the principles at work in my life.

3. One of the core principles of The Secret is the Law of Attraction, which simply states that what you think about will manifest in your life. It works will people too....have you ever thought about someone only to run into them later that day or receive a random email or call from them? Yep...law of attraction in action.

I had a couple instances of that which were too coincidental....it had to be the law of attraction.
  • Randomly, we had to go to the 'burbs for a doctors appointment over a weekend. I knew that a blogger friend Kelly lived nearby and when I was out there, I periodically found myself thinking about her since I knew I was in her neighborhood. The next day, I was running on the treadmill and decided to watch a documentary called "King of Pastry" about pastry chefs competing to become "MOF"and one of the competitors trained at The French Pastry School in Chicago. I didn't even know the school existed, but after watching the documentary, I found the webpage and looked at the classes and some of their events. Guess who emails me? KELLY! She is coming into the city for a class at The French Pastry School and she wants to get lunch with me after. ARE WE SERIOUS? I couldn't believe my screen. I had literally had both Kelly and this French Pastry School on my mind and all the sudden they show up.
  • I met a really awesome girl when I first moved to Chicago through the Partner's Club (WAGS of the business school students). We had a lot in common and I remember her saying that she loved FLYWHEEL and went all the time. Ever since I joined, I have thought I would run into her at one of the classes and I even saw someone with a similar hair cut and thought it was her. Can you guess who emailed me? Yep...that fabulous friend. I did a double take when I saw her name in my inbox.

4. One of the core exercises in The Magic is doing a journal exercise each morning called "Count Your Blessings" where you list 10 things your grateful for AND the reason your grateful for each morning.  On on particular day, one of my 10 things I was gratitude was "the amazing friends and inspiration I have found through blogging" (cliffnotes version since I was detailed in my journal) Later that day, I got this tweet...

Yep, I won. I have had a winning streak before HERE (right after that win, I also won compression socks).  I can clearly see it was a balance of giving and receiving that wasn't coincidence, but at that time in my life, I didn't have the confidence to share what I really thought.

I had seen Diana's recipes from this book on Instagram and they looked amazing. I even thought to myself, "I should try cooking some vegan recipes".....um, clearly the universe responded with a book FULL of the exact recipes I was admiring.

These are just some examples, and there are plenty more. We've had some serious magic go on in our household in the past couple weeks....

I feel a little weird sharing this, but it's a huge part of who I am, and how I live my life. I try to use this blog as a place to document my life, share knowledge, and interact with like-minded individuals, so I figured I may as well be open and honest.

Thoughts? Questions? Do you want to hear more? I have a lot to say on this subject matter....If you don't want to comment below, but have a personal question/comment/reaction, please don't hesitate to email me at poshmeetspavement{at}gmail.com

I have not read this book but many of these principles are also taught in the Bible. I don't know much about the law of attraction but I do know that very similar things happen to me everyday because of my faith. I think a lot of it leads back to selflessness and servitude and the reward that comes along with it. I am glad that you have found something that can inspire your readers and I think that you have found a little of God's provision for your life through this book! Thanks for sharing something that is so personal. :) So awesome!

Sierra... my twinnie... have you seen the movie "Happy?" They basically just go around the world, interviewing people from different cultures who are extremely happy, and talk about what happiness is and how it works. Most of them speak to gratitude and communal care as the main happiness magnets! :) I think the movie would be right up your alley. http://www.thehappymovie.com/film/

Hi Sierra, I just downloaded on my kindle... I'm really excited to implement this in my life in the new year. Thanks so much for sharing! It's crazy how you posted this and I just so happened to see it... I had this as my status on FB from this morning, ‎"Our world is like a boomerang. If we throw anger, anger comes back. If we throw love, love comes back. If we throw negativity, negativity comes back. If we throw positivity, positivity comes back."- Unknown. Have a wonderful weekend!!
